Davy Crockett

American frontiersman and folk hero Davy Crockett was born on this day in 1786. During his lifetime and even after his death, many of his adventures and exploits were immortalized in larger-than-life stories and almanacs, making him one of the most well known figures in American history.

Crockett was born on August 17, 1786 in what is now Greene County, Tennessee. His father, John Crockett, was one of the Overmountain Men, a group of American frontiersmen from west of the Appalachian Mountains who took part in the American Revolutionary War. During the war, he fought in the Battle of Kings Mountain.

During the Creek War in 1813, Crockett joined the Tennessee militia and spent much of his time hunting wild game for the soldiers. He later served during the War of 1812, but didn’t see much action during his service. After returning home, Crockett entered politics. In 1826, he was elected to the U.S House of Representatives. He would serve two terms in Congress before deciding to leave the world of politics behind to join the Texas Revolution. Crockett died at the Battle of the Alamo on March 6, 1836.
