The General Slocum Memorial Ceremony in 1905

On June 15, 1904, New York City experienced its worst disaster until 9/11 when the palace steamer General Slocum caught fire in Hell’s Gate and over a thousand German-American women and children perished. At Geneanet, we have built the family tree of every passenger known to be aboard. One year after the disaster, a memorial ceremony was held for the unidentified victims who were buried under a new monument.
