TalkTV host Peter Cardwell recently took a DNA test with MyHeritage. He chose to view his results for the first time during a live broadcast. MyHeritage VP of Marketing, Aaron Godfrey, joined the program to walk him through his ethnic origins, DNA matches, and family history findings.
With MyHeritage’s best-ever Black Friday DNA sale now live, it’s a good moment to explore your own roots: myheritage.com/dna.

Exploring identity in real time
Peter’s results revealed a strong link to the British Isles, with deep connections to Scotland, Ireland, Wales, and England, and small percentages from the Netherlands and Brittany. Aaron explained how these results reflect the movement of families across Northern Ireland over centuries, including the arrival of Scots during the Ulster Plantation.
A historical newspaper article confirmed the longstanding roots of the McLaren family in County Tyrone, tracing them back to soldiers who came to Ireland in 1690.
MyHeritage also located an old photo of Peter’s great-great-grandmother, Annie Dunbar, and helped build a family tree reaching back eight generations.
Connecting with living relatives
The live segment also included messages from DNA matches Peter had never met: relatives in the U.K. and New Zealand who shared stories about visiting his grandparents years ago. These connections brought back memories of Peter’s family and highlighted the way DNA testing can bring people together across continents.
Rediscovering a family hero
The conversation also covered the story of Peter’s great-uncle, Sergeant Robert Charles McLaren, a navigator in the Royal Air Force who was killed in action during World War II. Historical records on MyHeritage confirmed the details surrounding his identification and burial, giving Peter a chance to reflect on his family’s legacy.
For Peter, the experience was personal and unexpectedly moving. Seeing the map of his roots, hearing from distant cousins, and revisiting stories of relatives he admired created a strong feeling of belonging. It also showed viewers how a simple DNA test can open new doors for anyone curious about their family story.
