Profile of the Day: Quincy Jones

Today we remember iconic music producer Quincy Jones, who passed away at the age of 91.

Jones was born on March 14, 1933 to Sara Frances Wells and Quincy Delight Jones in Chicago, Illinois. When he was young, his mother suffered from mental illness and was hospitalized in an institution. He found music at a young age and at 14, met a 16-year-old Ray Charles. Jones later cited Charles as an early inspiration for his own music career.

With a career that spanned over 70 years, Jones first gained prominence as a jazz trumpeter, musical director, and composer. He then went on to produce three of Michael Jackson’s most successful albums including, Thriller. The album made Jackson a global superstar and still remains the best selling album of all time. A titan of the music industry, Jones won 28 Grammy awards out of 80 nominations.

In addition to music, Jones also produced projects on the big and small screen. He was a producer of the Oscar-nominated film The Color Purple and a producer of the hit television show The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, which starred Will Smith.

Jones died on November 3 at his home in Bel Air, California surrounded by his family.
