John Adams

On this day in 1735, the second President of the United States, John Adams, was born. A Founding Father, Adams served as the first Vice President to President George Washington before he was elected into office himself as the second President of the United States.

Adams was born in Braintree, Massachusetts to John Adams, Sr., a farmer and minister, and Susanna Boylston, an American socialite from a prominent Massachusetts family. The oldest of 3 sons, Adams graduated from Harvard College and became a highly successful lawyer in Boston.

Considered a Founding Father of the United States, Adams played a significant role in helping to craft the early beginnings of the American government. He was a member of the First Continental Congress and later helped to negotiate the Treaty of Paris, which officially ended the American Revolutionary War.

In 1796, Adams was elected the second President of the United States and was the first President to live in the executive mansion now known as the White House. Adams would serve only one term as President. He lost his bid for reelection in 1800 to Thomas Jefferson.

Adams died at the age of 90 on July 4, 1826, which was also the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. That same day, Thomas Jefferson also passed away. At the time of his death, his son, John Quincy Adams, was serving as the sixth President of the United States.
