During the American Revolution, Monroe left college to join the Continental Army. He served as part of General George Washington’s army at the Battle of Trenton, where he was severely wounded. As president, Monroe oversaw major westward expansion of the U.S. With the Monroe Doctrine, he made clear that any European intervention to colonize the Americas would be seen as a sign of aggression by the United States.

Considered the last of the Founding Fathers, Monroe died on July 4, 1831. He was the third president to die on Independence Day, the others being John Adams and Thomas Jefferson.
