Washington is remembered as one of the most important figures in American history. Born in 1732 on his family’s estate in Westmoreland County, Virginia, Washington led the Continental Army to victory during the American Revolution and served as the nation’s first President.

In 1797, Washington retired from the presidency, establishing the tradition of the two-term limit in office. The tradition continued until 1940 when Franklin D. Roosevelt won an unprecedented third term.

After retiring, Washington returned to his home at Mount Vernon. He died two years later after falling ill. News of his death sent the entire nation into mourning. His body was interred at Mount Vernon.
