Sloopers: the Bicentennial Celebrations of Norway’s First US Immigrants!

Two hundred years ago, a founding community of 53 Norwegians arrived in New York City aboard a small sloop, the Restauration, after an arduous three-month voyage. The community lived briefly in upstate New York, then settled in the Fox River valley in Illinois. These pioneers were the first of some 900,000 Norwegians who arrived in the United States over the following century. On October 9th, 2025, a replica of the Restauration sailing the Atlantic will dock in NYC, 200 years to the day!
