Historical Record Collections Added in June 2020

We just added 8.3 million historical records in June from six new collections from the U.K., Spain, and New Zealand. Four million records from a World War I medal index were added from the U.K. Three collections from the Vitoria Diocese in Spain were added: a baptism index, a marriage index, and a death index. In addition, two collections from New Zealand were added: a World War I service index and an index of early settlers. This update brings the total number of historical records on MyHeritage to 12.5 billion.

United Kingdom, Service Medal and Award Rolls Index, 1914–1918

This collection of 4.4 million records consists of index cards from the Army Medal Office for service medals and other awards that were issued following World War I. In addition to the first and last name, the collection contains information on the corp, regiment number, rank, and years of service of the individual.

The collection consists of British soldiers, British Army officers, Indian Army personnel, British Army nurses, Royal Flying Corps personnel, Royal Naval Division personnel, and a select number of civilians.

Among the records in this collection is that of William Hackett. William helped 3 other British servicemen to safety after being trapped in a mine due to an enemy explosion in Givenchy-lès-la-Bassée, France. For his bravery, he was awarded the Victoria Cross award, the most prestigious award granted to British and Commonwealth service personnel.

Vitoria, Spain

Vitoria-Gasteiz is the de facto capital and largest municipality of Basque Country, an autonomous community in northern Spain. The autonomous community is located within a greater region also known as the Basque Country (Euskera Herria), home of the Basque people: an ethnic group indigenous to the region with roots that predate the Roman invasion. The Basques still maintain a distinct language, culture, and identity.

This month we have added three collections from the Vitoria Diocese in Spain that date back as far as the 16th century. These collections may prove quite valuable for anyone with Basque roots.

Spain, Vitoria Diocese, Index of Baptisms, 1535–1903

This collection of 2.4 million records consists of an index of baptism records from the Diocese of Vitoria in Spain. Records may contain the first and last names of the baptized child, the first and last names of the child’s father and mother, the date of the baptism, and the parish, town, municipality, and either the province or the historical territory where the baptism was performed.

The index includes the baptism record of the daughter of Heraclio Fournier González, María Del Cármen Forunier Partearroyo. Heraclio Fournier González is most famous for his world-renowned playing card designs. In 1889, the design received a bronze medal at the Universal Exposition in Paris.

In his daughter’s baptism record, you can find the date of the baptism, the full names of the parents, details about the Parish, and details about the original images.

This collection consists of an index of death records from the Diocese of Vitoria in Spain. Records may contain the first and last names of the deceased, the date, and the parish, town, municipality, and either the province or the historical territory where the burial took place.

Spain, Vitoria Diocese, Index of Marriages, 1559–1899 

This collection consists of an index of marriage records from the Diocese of Vitoria in Spain. Records may contain the first and last names of the bride and the groom, the date of the marriage, and the parish, town, municipality, and either the province or the historical territory where the marriage was performed.

New Zealand, World War I Service Personnel and Reserves Index

This collection is an index of soldiers from New Zealand who served in World War I. Records may contain the following information: first and last name of the soldier, place of birth, residence, recruitment district, date of death, place of burial, and the full name and residence of the soldier’s next of kin. The following additional information may be included in the records: marital status, occupation, employer, rank, military unit, and various notes or comments.

New Zealand, Index of Early Settlers, 1840–1864

This collection consists of an index of individuals living in New Zealand during the mid-19th century. The records are from various sources, primarily electoral and jury rolls from 1853–1864. Records may contain the following information: first and last name of the individual, residence within New Zealand, and the year the individual was recorded living there.

This collection contains a record of statesman Edward Gibbon Wakefield, best known for the colonization plan named after him — the Wakefield scheme — that helped bring working class members to South Australia Province.
