MyHeritage Adds 72 Million Records and 38 Historical Record Collections in March 2023 

In March 2023, we added 72 million records from 38 historical record collections around the world! The collections are from Australia, Austria, Canada, France, Germany, Portugal, Scotland, the U.K., and the U.S. and include birth, marriage, death, census, emigrant, voter, passport, wills, and employee records. Many of these records also include scans of the original images.

1911 France Census

From 1836 until 1936 a national census was conducted every five years in France except for 1871 (which was delayed one year and conducted in 1872) and 1916 (which was skipped). Census records provide an excellent resource for finding ancestral family members living together and identifying their relationships, birth years, and birth places.

Germany, Hesse Emigrants

This collection contains records of emigrants departing from the Hessian region of Germany from the year 1539 onwards. Records typically include the name of the emigrant, date of birth, date and place of departure, and emigration destination.

Hessian emigrants left the German state of Hesse for many reasons, including economic hardship, political instability, and religious persecution. These emigrants settled in a variety of countries around the world, including the United States, Canada, Brazil, Argentina, Australia, and New Zealand. The decline of the textile industry in the mid-19th century, the German Revolution of 1848, and the Thirty Years’ War in the 17th century were all factors that contributed to Hessian emigration during this period.

Portugal, Madeira Passport Applications

This collection contains records of individuals who applied for a passport, traveling to and from the Portuguese Islands of Madeira from the year 1828 onwards. Records typically include the applicant’s name, date of birth or baptism, place of birth, application date, and destination. In addition, some records contain the names of the applicant’s parents, spouse, and spouse’s parents.

Scotland, Mental Health Records

The records in this collection originate from a set held at the National Archives of Scotland in Edinburgh (MC7 series), titled General Register of Lunatics in Asylums. Records may contain the full name of the patient, the birth date, the admission date, the location within Scotland, and the date of death in cases where a patient died in an asylum.

While record-keeping commenced in 1858, the first volume contains records of all patients who resided in Scottish asylums on January 1st, 1858, with these patients having been admitted as early as 1807. Many of the patients in this collection spent most of their lives in an asylum.

Sweden, Sailors and Seamen’s House Enrollments

This collection contains records of individuals who served in Swedish sailor houses, between the years 1752 and 1941. Records typically include the name of the registrant, date and place of birth, residence, date and place of enlistment and discharge, and the name of the ship.

Swedish sailor houses mentioned in this collection are Härnösand, Gamlakarleby, Västervik, Hudiksvall, Söderhamn, Gävle, Karlskrona, Oskarshamn, Visby and Örnsköldsvik.

The institution of the Sjömanshus (Seamen’s house) began in 1748 when the first one opened up in Stockholm. Sjömanshus existed in several Swedish cities for several hundred years and their activities were aimed at collecting information about Swedish seamen and Swedish merchant ships. Another purpose of this organization was to set up houses for retired and injured seamen and their families so that they could receive benefits. Every seaman had to be registered at a seamen’s house, usually within the district where he was registered under the church. This collection contains two types of records, enrollment registers (Tjänstematrikel) and enlistment ledgers (Mönstringsliggare).

England, Middlesex and Westminster Sessions of the Peace

This collection contains lists of prisoners tried at Middlesex or Westminster Sessions of the Peace in England, between the years 1836 and 1889. Records typically include the name of the individual, age, and the date when the trial took place. Records may also include information about the occupation, previous convictions, offense charged with, verdict, and sentence.

“”Sessions of the peace”” were courts held in England during the medieval and early modern periods that dealt with minor criminal offenses and civil disputes. They were presided over by justices of the peace, who were appointed by the monarch to maintain law and order in their local area.

The sessions of the peace were usually held four times a year and were attended by the local gentry and other prominent citizens, who acted as jurors and provided local knowledge to the justices. The courts had jurisdiction over a range of offenses, including theft, assault, and public disorder, and could impose fines, imprisonment, or corporal punishment. The calendars that are mentioned in this collection are documents or records maintained by correctional institutions or law enforcement agencies that contain information about the individuals who are currently incarcerated or have been previously incarcerated in their facilities.

This collection contains records of wills from the city of Bangor and Carmarthenshire county, Wales between the years 1860 and 1941. Records typically include the name of the deceased, place of residence, and the date and place where the will was registered.

This collection contains burial records from the city of Wrexham, located in Denbighshire, a county in the northeast side of Wales from the year 1876 onwards. Records typically include the name of the deceased, year and place of death, and date of burial.

Florida, Passenger Lists

This collection contains records and images of passengers who arrived via ships to Key West and Tampa, Florida, United States between the years 1898 and 1945. Some passengers ended their journey in Florida and others had other final destinations in the United States and abroad. Records typically include the name of the passenger, year and place of birth, place of departure, date and place of arrival, and the name of the ship. Records may also include the names of the parents, spouse, siblings, children, and other relatives.

Early passenger lists were single-page manifests and recorded minimal information about passengers. Over time, forms were standardized and additional questions were added. By 1907, passenger manifests contained 29 columns and were two pages wide. The addition of names and addresses of relatives both in the United States and in the home country were also added to manifests starting in 1907.

A common omission for genealogists when dealing with two-page manifests has been to locate the first page and miss the existence of the second. This collection includes single joint images that have been stitched together, so that important information will not be missed.

The supreme court of New Jersey is the highest court in the state and plays a crucial role in interpreting the law and shaping the legal system. Comprised of a Chief Justice and six Associate Justices, it hears a variety of cases, ranging from criminal appeals to civil rights disputes.

Examples

The France, Paris Census, 1926 includes the record of nobel prize winning physicist and chemist Marie Curie. The census record includes her birth year and place, 1897, Pologne and her address in Paris at the time of the 1926 census, Notre-Dame, 4e Arrondissement, Paris, Île-de-France. The record also names her two children, Irène and Loe Curie and household member Albertine Manguy.

The Austria, Vienna Church Marriages collection contains the marriage record of renowned Austrian composer Gustav Mahler. Mahler married Alma Margaretha Maria Schindler February 9, 1902 in Karlskirche, Vienna, Austria. The record includes Gustav’s birth date July 7, 1860, his age 41, and his father and mother’s names, Bernard and Maria Mahler. The record similarly records the bride, Alma Margaretha Maria Schindler’s birth date, August 31, 1879, her age, 22, and her father and mother’s names, Josef Schindler and Anna Sofei.
