Although he was known professionally as “Adam West,” he was actually born William West Anderson on September 19, 1928 in Walla Walla, Washington. His father, Otto West Anderson, worked as a farmer, and his mother, Audrey Volenne Speer, was an opera singer and concert pianist.

After serving in the U.S. Army, where he worked as an announcer on the American Forces Network station, West moved to Hawaii and became the host of a local television show. He eventually moved to Hollywood and adopted the stage name Adam West. His big break came when he was cast as the crime-fighting superhero Batman on the television series, Batman. The campy television show ran for three seasons before it was canceled in 1968. Although he would continue to find work beyond the television show, West would forever be remembered for his iconic turn as the Caped Crusader.

West died on June 9, 2017 at the age of 88 following a battle with leukemia.
