Alan Rickman

Today we remember actor Alan Rickman on what would have been his 73rd birthday.

Rickman was born on February 21, 1946 to Margaret Doreen Rose Bartlett and Bernard William Rickman, a factory worker. At the age of 8, Rickman’s father died of lung cancer, leaving his mother to raise Rickman and his three siblings alone. However, three years after opening his own graphic design studio, Rickman decided that he would pursue acting professionally. At the age of 26, he earned a scholarship to the prestigious acting academy, the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.

He began his acting career in theater and made a name for himself as a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company. In 1987, he earned his first Tony Award nomination. A versatile actor, Rickman took on a wide variety of roles on the big screen. These roles ranged from playing the villain in the Hollywood blockbuster film Die Hard to the romantic lead in the period drama Sense and Sensibility. In 2001, Rickman would take on his most iconic role as Professor Severus Snape in the Harry Potter film series.
