Happy birthday to Prince Charles! Today the Prince of Wales turns 70 years old.
Prince Charles was born on November 14, 1948 in Buckingham Palace. The eldest child of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, the Prince became the heir apparent at the age of 3 when his mother became Queen after the death of his grandfather, King George VI. With his mother holding the record of the longest-reigning British monarch, Charles is the oldest and longest-serving heir apparent in British history.
In 1981, he married Lady Diana Spencer and together they had two children, William, Duke of Cambridge and Harry, Duke of Sussex. The couple divorced in 1996 and tragically, Princess Diana was killed in a car crash in Paris the following year. In 2005, the Queen gave her consent to allow Prince Charles to marry his long-time mistress Camilla Parker Bowles. The Prince would be the only member of the royal family to have a civil rather than a church wedding in England.
Soon Prince Charles will welcome his fourth grandchild as the royal family awaits the birth of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s first child in the spring of next year.
