Profile of the Day: Diana Rigg

Today we remember English actress Diana Rigg, who has passed away at the age of 82. Best known as secret agent Emma Peel in the classic 1960s television series The Avengers, Rigg had found a new generation of fans as Lady Olenna Tyrell in the HBO fantasy drama, Game of Thrones.

Rigg was born on July 20, 1938 in Doncaster, South Yorkshire, England to Louis Rigg, a railway engineer, and Beryl Helliwell. While she was still an infant, the family moved to Bilkner, India, where she lived until the age of 8. She learned to speak Hindi as a second language before returning to England for boarding school.

Rigg’s career spanned across television, film, and theater. After training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, Rigg joined the Royal Shakespeare Company. In 1965, Rigg got her first taste of stardom when she was cast as Emma Peel in the fourth season of the British spy series, The Avengers. She would earn two Emmy award nominations for the role. After leaving the show, Rigg found success on the big screen. In 1969, she was cast in the James Bond film, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.

In 2013, Rigg was cast as Lady Olenna Tyrell in the HBO fantasy drama, Game of Thrones. Her popular and critically acclaimed performance earned her 3 Emmy award nominations for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series.
