She was born Doris Mary Ann Kappelhoff on April 3, 1922 in Cincinnati, Ohio to Alma Weiz and William Joseph Kappelhoff. After a car accident derailed her hope of becoming a professional dancer, Day turned to singing. She gained popularity on radio and sang with several big bands,

In addition to her successful singing career, Day was one of Hollywood’s most popular stars of the 1960′s. Some of her most successful films include The Man Who Knew Too Much, Calamity Jane, and Pillow Talk, for which she earned her first and only Academy Award nomination. The song “Que Sera, Sera,” from the film The Man Who Knew Too Much, would become her signature song and be used as the theme song for her sitcom The Doris Day Show.

After retiring from acting, Day became an animal welfare advocate and co-founded the Doris Day Animal Foundation. In 2004, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George W. Bush.

Day passed way at her home in Carmel Valley, California on May 13, 2019, just one month after celebrating her 97th birthday.
