Garbo was born Greta Lovisa Gustafsson on September 18, 1905 in Stockholm, Sweden. She grew up in poverty and when her father became ill and lost his job, Garbo dropped out of school at 13 to take care of him. Despite her hardships, Garbo dreamed of becoming an actor from an early age. She got her start as a hat model in commercials for a department store, followed by roles in Swedish and German films.
At 19, Garbo starred in her first America film and became an instant hit with audiences. Soon she was one of Hollywood’s highest paying stars. She would go on to earn three Academy Award nominations for Best Actress and receive an honorary Oscar in 1955.
After retiring from film at the age of 35, Garbo led a private life and became an art collector. At the time of her death in 1990, her art collection was said to have been worth millions.
