Bergman lost both her parents at a very young age; her mother died when she was 3 and her father passed when she was 13. After her father’s death, she was sent to live with an aunt, who died of heart disease only six months later. At 17, she received a scholarship to the Royal Dramatic Theatre School, where Greta Garbo had earned a similar scholarship just a few years earlier.

Bergman appeared in several Swedish films before catching the eye of Hollywood producer David O. Selznick, who cast her in the English remake of Intermezzo. But it was after the success of Casablanca that she truly became a movie star. Throughout her highly successful career, Bergman won three Academy Awards, two Emmys, and a Tony. Today she is considered by many to be one of the greatest actors in film history.

She died in 1982 on her 67th birthday.
