On this day in 1643, Isaac Newton was born. Considered one of the most significant scientific figures in history, Newton revolutionized our understanding of the world.

Newton was born prematurely three months after the death of his father, also named Isaac Newton. When he was three, his mother remarried and Newton was sent to be raised by his maternal grandmother. A gifted student, Newton especially excelled at mathematics. He would go on to make great advancements in the field, including the invention of calculus.

In 1687, Newton published his groundbreaking book, Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica, in which Newton formulated the laws of motion and universal gravitation. The book is considered to be one of the most important works in the history of science.

Newton died on March 31, 1727 at the age of 84 and was buried in Westminster Abbey.
