Vermeer was born to Digna Baltens and Reijnier Jansz, a silk weaver who produced caffa, a fine satin fabric. His father later became an innkeeper and an art dealer. Vermeer spent most of his life in the city of Delft and devoted much of his life to his art.
Widely regarded as one of the greatest Dutch artists of all time, Vermeer specialized in capturing the domestic life of the middle-class. Some of his most famous paintings include “The Milkmaid,” “The Music Lesson,” and “Girl with a Pearl Earring,” which is considered one of Vermeer’s greatest masterpieces.
