Profile of the Day: John Keats

The son of Thomas Keats and Frances Jennings, Keats was the eldest of the couple’s four surviving children. Keats lost both of his parents while he was still young. His father died when Keats was 8 after falling from a horse. When he was 14, his mother died of tuberculosis. During this time, Keats found solace in the arts and literature. Despite studying medicine, Keats found himself devoting his time to poetry. Although his poems were not generally well received by critics during his lifetime, today Keats is regarded as one of the most beloved English poets.

In 1819, Keats contracted tuberculosis and his health seriously declined. He died on February 23, 1821 in Rome at the age of 25. His last request was to be buried without a name or dates with only the words: “Here lies One whose Name was writ in Water.”
