Profile of the Day: John Lithgow

Happy birthday to John Lithgow! Today the actor turns 75.

Lithgow was born on October 19, 1945 in Rochester, New York to Sarah Jane Price and Arthur Washington Lithgow, III.

He was born into a theatrical family, his mother was an actress and his father was a theatrical producer and director. Due to his father’s job, the family moved frequently during Lithgow’s childhood. Fun fact: while his family was living Ohio, Lithgow was babysat by future civil rights activist Coretta Scott King.

After completing his studies at Harvard and the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, Lithgow found success in theater. He made his Broadway debut in 1973 and earned his first Tony Award for his performance in The Changing Room. A versatile actor, Lithgow has also provided memorable performances on the big and small screens. He’s earned two Academy Award nominations for his roles in The World According to Garp and Terms of Endearment and has won 6 out of 12 Emmy Award nominations for his work on television. In fact, while starring on the hit sitcom, 3rd Rock From the Sun, Lithgow received a nomination for his comedic performance each year the show was on the air.

In addition to his work as an actor, Lithgow has also written several children’s books and has recorded several children’s albums, for which he has earned 4 Grammy nominations.
