Julie Andrews

Happy birthday, Julie Andrews! Today the beloved star turns 83.

Julie Andrews was born Julia Elizabeth Wells on October 1, 1935 in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, England. When she was young, her parents divorced and remarried. She later adopted her stepfather’s surname, Andrews. By the age of 10, she began performing with her mother and stepfather on stage.

Since making her Broadway debut in 1954, Andrews has starred as some of the most beloved musicals on both the stage and screen. She earned her first Tony nomination in 1956 for her starring as Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady. However, when the Broadway show was adapted into film, the studio made the decision to replace her with Audrey Hepburn, who was already an established box office draw. The casting change allowed Andrews to accept the role in another Hollywood classic, Mary Poppins. The film became one of Disney’s most successful movies at the time and earned Andrews her first Academy Award for Best Actress.

In 1965, she went on to star in The Sound of Music, which became the highest grossing film of the year and land Andrews her second Oscar nomination. She would go on to earn a third nod in 1982 for her dual role in Victor/Victoria.

Although she lost her signing voice in 1997 after her vocal chords were damaged during an operation, Andrews has continued to make appearances on the screen and stage. What’s your favorite Julie Andrews movie?
