Profile of the Day: King Charles III

Happy birthday to King Charles III! Today the King of the United Kingdom turns 76.

Charles was born on November 14, 1948 in Buckingham Palace during the reign of his maternal grandfather, King George VI. The first child and eldest son of Philip, Duke of Edinburgh and a then Princess Elizabeth, Duchess of Edinburgh (later Queen Elizabeth II), Charles became heir apparent when his mother acceded to the throne after the death of her father in 1952.

After the death of his mother in 2022, Charles became King. At the age of 73, Charles was the oldest person to accede to the British throne. He also held the distinction as the longest-serving heir apparent, having held the position for 70 years, 214 days.
