Profile of the Day: Lady Bird Johnson

On this day in 1912, Lady Bird Johnson, former First Lady of the United States, was born in Karnack, Texas.

She was born Claudia Alta Taylor on December 22, 1912 at “The Brick House,” an antebellum planation mansion on the outskirts of town. As a child, her family nurse commented that she was as “pretty as a ladybird,” and the nickname stuck.

As First Lady, Johnson worked on the beautification of the nation’s capital. She stated, “where flowers bloom, so does hope.” Her efforts would inspire similar programs throughout the country. She is also credited with creating the modern structure of the First Lady’s office, becoming the first to have her own press secretary and chief of staff.

On January 10, 1977, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Gerald Ford.
