Happy birthday to Laura Dern! Today the actress not only celebrates her 53rd birthday, but also her first Oscar win! Last night, Dern won her first Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Marriage Story. In her acceptance speech, Dern called it “the best birthday present ever.”

Dern was born on February 10, 1967 in Los Angeles, California to stars Bruce Dern and Diane Ladd. As the child of actors, Dern began her own Hollywood career at the age of 11. In 1991, she starred in the drama Rambling Rose alongside her mother in a supporting role. Their performances earned them both an Academy Award nomination, a Best Actress nomination for Dern and a Best Supporting Actress nomination for Ladd. It also marked the first time in Oscar history that a mother-daughter duo was nominated in the same year and for the same film.
Throughout her career, Dern has earned multiple awards and much acclaim for her performances in both film and television. She earned her second Academy Award nomination in 2015 for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Wild, which starred her future Big Little Lies co-star Reese Witherspoon.
