Louis XIII was the eldest child of King Henry IV and his wife, Maria de Medici. At the age of 9, Louis became the King of France after the assassination of his father in 1610. In the early years of his rule, Louis’s mother acted as regent until he took full control at the age of 16. He then banished his mother into exile.
During his reign, Louis XIII relied heavily on his chief minister, Cardinal Richelieu, who sought to consolidate royal power. Louis’s later victories in the war against Spain would foreshadow France’s dominance in Europe under his son’s rule.
Louis XIII died of tuberculosis on May 14, 1643 at the age of 41. After his death, his son, Louis XIV, succeeded to the throne at the age of 4. He reigned for 72 years and 110 days, making him one of the longest reigning monarch in European history.
