Happy birthday to Matt Damon! Today the actor turns 50.

Damon was born on October 8, 1970 in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He is the second son of Kent Telfer Damon, a stockbroker, and Nancy Carlsson-Paige, a professor in early childhood education. Through his mother’s branch of the family, Damon has Swedish and Finnish roots. His mother’s family surname was changed from “Pajari” to “Paige.”
In 1997, Damon catapulted to stardom alongside his childhood friend, Ben Affleck. The famous friends had penned the screenplay for the critically acclaimed film, Good Will Hunting. The duo would win the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay and earn Damon his first Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. It turns out the pair are also related! According to Geni’s World Family Tree, the two are 10th cousins once removed.
Since his big break, Damon has starred in a wide variety of roles, from the action-packed Jason Bourne series to critically-acclaimed dramas, such as The Martian, for which he earned another Oscar nomination for Best Actor.
