Howard was born Moses Harry Horwitz on June 19, 1897 in Brooklyn, New York. He was the fourth of five sons born to Solomon Horwitz and Jennie Gorovitz, both of Lithuanian Jewish ancestry. From a young age, Howard developed an interest in performing.

Eventually, Howard and his brother, Shemp, and comedian Larry Fine formed the comedy team known as the Three Stooges. Later, Howard’s brother Curly would replace Shemp after he chose to leave the group. Their slapstick comedy was a huge hit with audiences for decades. Over the course of their run, the Three Stooges appeared in 220 films and 190 shorts.

Howard died on May 4, 1974 at the age of 77.

Fun fact: Howard’s wife, Helen Schonberger, was Harry Houdin’s first cousin once removed!
