Profile of the Day: Nicolaus Copernicus

Nicolaus Copernicus

On this day in 1473, mathematician and astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus was born. Copernicus is remembered for formulating a heliocentric model of the universe, which placed the Sun, rather than the Earth, at the center.

Copernicus was born to an affluent merchant family in what is today Toruń, Poland. At the age of 10, Copernicus’s father died. His paternal uncle then took it upon himself to ensure Copernicus received a good education. While studying mathematics, he was encouraged to pursue his interests in geography and astronomy.

Shortly before his death in 1543, Copernicus published his groundbreaking findings, De revolutionibus orbium coelestium (On the Revolutions of the Celestrial Spheres), in which he proposed a heliocentric model of the universe, which challenged the long held view that the Earth was the center of the universe. Its publication would mark the beginning of a new era in science and influence the major figures of the Scientific Revolution.
