The Beatles drummer was born Richard Starkey in Liverpool, England on July 7, 1940. He was in and out of hospitals for much of his childhood. After contracting tuberculosis in 1953, he was admitted to a sanitarium where he stayed for two years. To help stimulate his motor activity and relieve boredom, Starr was encouraged to join the hospital band and discovered his love of playing the drums.

When the Beatles first formed in 1960, Starr was a member of another Liverpool group, Rory Storm and the Hurricanes. After achieving moderate success with them, he was asked to join the Beatles to replace their drummer, Pete Best. Soon after, Starr was on the fast track to fame in what would become one of the biggest and most influential bands in music history.
