Today we remember Robert F. Kennedy on the 50th anniversary of his assassination. After winning the California presidential primary, Kennedy was shot at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles shortly after midnight on June 5, 1968. He would succumb to his wounds 26 hours later.
Kennedy was the seventh child born to Joseph Kennedy, Sr. And Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy. During his brother’s presidency, Kennedy served as the Attorney General of the United States and was one of President John F. Kennedy’s closest advisors. He was a prominent advocate of the Civil Rights Movement and fought against organized crime.
On June 5, 1968, Kennedy had scored a major victory by winning the California Democratic primary. After giving his victory speech in the ballroom of the Ambassador Hotel, Kennedy was shot three times in a hail of gunfire. Five other people were also wounded during the shooting. Kennedy died the following day from his injuries.
Kennedy was buried on June 8, 1968 at Arlington National Cemetery near his brother, John.
