Sherlock Holmes author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was born on this day in 1859.

Doyle was born in Edinburgh, Scotland to Charles Altamont Doyle and Mary Foley. Supported by wealthy uncles, Doyle studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh. It was during this time that he began writing short stories.

In 1887, he published his first Sherlock Holmes story. Doyle partially based the character of Holmes on his former university teacher, Joseph Bell, for his impressive deduction skills. A prolific writer, Doyle would write over 60 mystery stories featuring the iconic detective and his loyal assistant Dr. Watson.

Fun fact: Doyle is related to Sherlock Holmes! Actor Benedict Cumberbatch, famous for his portrayal of Holmes on the small screen, is his 12th cousin four times removed!
