Before gaining fame as a mountaineer, Hillary worked as a beekeeper like his father before him. He joined the Royal New Zealand Air Force during World War II, but was badly burned during a boat accident.

After the war, he decided to pursue his love of mountain climbing and was determined to climb Mount Everest, the world’s highest peak. On May 29, 1953, Hillary, along with his guide, Tenzing Norgay, became the first climbers to reach the summit of Mount Everest. Hillary’s achievement made international headlines and upon his return, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II.
