Today we remember “The Crocodile Hunter” Steve Irwin on what would have been his 57th birthday.

Irwin was born on February 22, 1962 in Essendon, Victoria, Australia to Lyn Hakinsson and Bob Irwin. His parents started a small Queensland Reptile and Fauna Park and so naturally Irwin grew up around the park’s wildlife. By the age of nine, Irwin was handling crocodiles himself. He later worked as a volunteer for Queensland’s East Coast Crocodile Management program.

Irwin devoted much of his life to wildlife conservation and environmentalism. In 1996, Irwin debuted his hit television show, The Crocodile Hunter, on Australian television. The first episode consisted of footage captured during Irwin’s honeymoon with his wife, Terri. The couple had spent their honeymoon trapping crocodiles together. A hit with audiences, the show quickly made its way overseas and eventually reached over 130 countries.

Sadly, Irwin died on September 4, 2006 at the age of 44. He was filming a new documentary series on location at the Batt Reef in Queensland when a short-tail stingray pierced Irwin’s chest with its barb.
