Profile of the Day: Taylor Swift

Happy birthday to Taylor Swift! Today the music superstar turns 30.

Swift was born on December 13, 1989 in Reading, Pennsylvania and was named after the Grammy-winning singer-songwriter James Taylor. Many years later in 2011, Swift would have the chance to perform on stage with Taylor during one of her concerts in Madison Square Garden. Music had always been a part of Swift’s life from an early age. Her maternal grandmother was a former opera singer and performed around the world as a member of the Houston Grand Opera. She even hosted her own television show in Puerto Rico for several years.

Before moving to Nashville, Tennessee to pursue her music career, Swift spent the early years of her life growing up on a Christmas tree farm. These early experiences inspired her latest holiday song, “Christmas Tree Farm.”

Since catapulting to fame, Swift has become one of the best-selling artists of all time. She’s won 10 Grammys and 29 American Music Awards, setting the record for most wins for an artist just this year. In fact, 2019 has proven to be a big year for Swift. She released her seventh studio album, Lover, which has earned her 3 more Grammy nominations. Last night, she accepted the first-ever Woman of the Decade Award at Billboard’s annual Women in Music Event. Swift will close out the year with an appearance in the big screen adaptation of the musical, Cats. For the film, Swift and Andrew Lloyd Webber co-wrote a new song, “Beautiful People,” which has just earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Original Song in a Motion Picture.
