Profile of the Day: Woody Harrelson

Happy birthday to Woody Harrelson! Today the actor celebrates his 59th birthday.

Harrelson was born Woodrow Tracy Harrelson on July 23, 1961 in Midland, Texas. His father was a convicted contract killer and received a life sentence in 1979. Raised by a single mother, Harrelson grew up in a very religious Presbyterian household. He later attend Hanover College on a Presbyterian scholarship.

In 1985, Harrelson got his big break on the hit television show, Cheers. As bartender Woody Boyd, Harrelson earned five Emmy Award nominations for the roll, winning one in 1989.

After eight seasons on the hit show, Harrelson found box office success and critical acclaim on the big screen, including White Men Can’t Jump, Natural Born Killers, and The People vs. Larry Flynt, for which he earned the first of three Academy Award nominations. With a versatile career, Harrelson has also found himself involved in big film franchises, including the Hunger Games series and the Star Wars universe in Solo: A Star Wars Story.
