HTML Tree: Move This Person and Resolve Duplicates Now Available

A few months ago, we introduced our new HTML tree on Geni, which made it possible for all users to finally view and edit their family trees on their mobile device or tablet. Since our announcement, we have continued to work hard to bring some of the Flash tree’s most powerful features to the HTML version of the tree. Today we’re excited to share that two very important tools are now available on the HTML tree – Move This Person and Resolve Duplicates.

Move This Person

One of the most powerful features of the Flash tree is the Move This Person tool. The tool enables users to quickly and easily move a person from one area of the tree to another. A simple drag-and-drop of a node is all it takes! The tool is perfect for indicating when a person is related to the tree in more than one way or for easy merging of duplicate profiles.

Click or tap on the node of the person you would like to move to reveal the side panel. On a mobile device, this panel will slide from the right and fill the entire screen. In the panel, click or tap “More” and select “Move Profile.”

This will add the node to the tray titled “Map These People.” If you are on your desktop or tablet, the tray will appear on the right.

If you are on your mobile device, the tray will appear at the bottom of the screen.

You may drag the screen to navigate to the correct position in the tree. Then drag and drop the node on top of its duplicate or related family member in the tree. You will be asked to select how the person is related or if it is the same person.

When a person is related in the tree in more than one way, a cycle is created. For example, this may occur when two brothers marry two sisters. A green circle icon will appear at the bottom left of the node to indicate the profile is a part of a cycle. When you click or tap on the icon, you will move to the person’s next position in the tree.

Resolve Duplicates

The Resolve Duplicates tool is now also available on your desktop or tablet (note Resolve Duplicates is not available on mobile devices). You can access the Resolve Duplicates tool by clicking or tapping on a node to open the side panel. Under “More,” select “Resolve Duplicates.”

In the side panel, click or tap “More” and select “Resolve Duplicates”

Simply drag and drop the duplicate nodes on top of each other to prepare a stack of profiles for merging.

Numbers at the top right of the node will indicate how many profiles have been stacked together. If you accidentally drop a node in the wrong place, you can click or tap “unlink” to remove the node from the stack. When you are ready, click ‘Merge Duplicates’ to view the profiles side-by-side to compare and complete the merge.

Just like in the Flash tree, a yellow triangle will appear at the bottom left corner of a node to indicate that there is a Tree Conflict. If there are multiple sets of parents, you may either click “Edit” to set biological or adoptive/foster parents or click on the yellow triangle icon to view and resolve duplicates.
