Profile of the Day: Billy Crystal

Happy birthday, Billy Crystal! Today the comedian and actor turns 75.

William Edward Crystal was born on March 14, 1948 in New York City, New York. His father, Jack Crystal, worked as a jazz promoter, producer and owner of Commodore Music Store. He sometimes brought home comedy albums featuring Bob Newhart and Sid Caesar, which had a great influence on Crystal growing up.

After starting in stand up, Crystal got his big break when he landed the role of Jodie Dallas on Soap. The groundbreaking role was one of the first openly gay characters on television. He went on to star in many memorable and successful films, including The Princess BrideWhen Harry Met Sally…City Slickers, and Analyze This.
