Reeve was born on September 25, 1952 in New York City, New York to Barbara Pitney Lamb, a journalist, and Franklin D’Olier Reeve, a teacher and poet. Through his mother’s branch of the family, Reeve was a direct descendant of Mayflower passenger William Bradford, who served as Governor of the Plymouth Colony.
With a passion for acting from a young age, Reeve went on to study at the prestigious Juilliard School in New York. It was there that he became close friends with fellow actor Robin Williams.
Although Reeve held a wide variety of roles throughout his career, he is best remembered for his iconic portrayal of Superman. Reeve starred as the red-caped superhero in four Superman films.
Sadly in 1995, a horse riding accident left Reeve paralyzed from the neck down. After the accident, Reeve became a leading advocate for stem cell research. He established the Christopher and Diana Reeve Foundation, which is dedicated to finding treatments and cures for paralysis by spinal cord injuries and other neurological disorders.
Reeve died on October 10, 2004 at the age of 52.
