Williams was born on July 21, 1951 in Chicago, Illinois to Robert Fitzgerald Williams and Laurie McLaurin. His second great grandfather, Anselm J. McLaurin, served as a senator for Mississippi and later, the state’s 34th governor. Williams described himself as a shy child and didn’t break out of his shell until he joined his high school drama department. In 1973, he attended the Juilliard School on a full scholarship. It was there that he first met actor Christopher Reeve. The college roommates would maintain a close friendship until Reeve’s death in 2004.

After rising to fame as the star of the television series Mork & Mindy, Williams went on to establish a highly successful film career. A gifted improvisor and comedian, Williams found box office success in comedies such as Mrs. Doubtfire and Jumanji. He also earned much critical acclaim for his dramatic performances and earned four Academy Award nominations throughout his career. In 1998, he won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in Good Will Hunting.
