The French painter is remembered as the founder of the French Impressionist movement. In fact, the movement’s name was derived from Monet’s painting Impression, Sunrise. Monet’s artistic style sought to capture the movement of light and its changing qualities. His work often illustrated ordinary subject matters and nature, such as his famous series of paintings depicting haystacks and water lilies.

Monet died of lung cancer on December 5, 1926 at the age of 86.

A popular painter during his lifetime, today Monet remains one of the most famous and influential painters in history.
