Debbie Reynolds

Today we remember actress Debbie Reynolds on what would have been her 87th birthday.

Reynolds was born on April 1, 1932 in El Paso, Texas to Maxine “Minnie” Harman and Raymond Francis Reynolds. Her father was a carpenter and worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad. In 1939, her family moved to Burbank, California and at the age of 16, she won the Miss Burbank beauty contest. The contest led Reynolds to land her first film contract with Warner Bros.

She got her big break when she was cast in the musical Singin’ in the Rain, starring Gene Kelly and Donald O’Connor. Before landing the role, Reynolds had never sung or danced before on film. The role would become one of the most memorable roles of her career. In 1964, she starred in The Unsinkable Molly Brown and earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress.

Sadly, Reynolds died on December 28, 2016 at the age of 84. She passed just one day after the death of her daughter, Carrie Fisher.
