Fisher was born Edwin Jack Fisher on August 10, 1928 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Kate Minnicker and Joseph Tisch, both Jewish immigrants from Russia. The family’s surname was later changed to Fisher. The fourth of seven children, Fisher discovered his natural singing talent at a young age. He won his first talent show at the age of 4 and by the age of 12, he was singing professionally on the local radio station. He dropped out of his last year of high school to pursue his career as a professional singer.

During the 1950s, Fisher became one of the most popular singers in the country. In 1955, he married actress Debbie Reynolds and together they became known as one of Hollywood’s most beloved couples. They had two children, actress Carrie Fisher and Todd Fisher.

However, much of his music success would later be overshadowed by his scandalous affair with Elizabeth Taylor, who was the widow of his best friend, Mike Todd. He divorced Reynolds to marry Taylor, but the resulting bad publicity would lead to the cancelation of his television show, The Eddie Fisher Show. Taylor would later divorce Fisher to marry actor Richard Burton.

Fisher died on September 22, 2010 at the age of 82.
