Elizabeth Taylor

Today we remember acting legend Elizabeth Taylor on what would have been her 87th birthday.

Elizabeth Rosemond Taylor was born on February 27, 1932 in London, England to American parents, Francis Lenn Taylor, an art dealer, and Sara Sothern, a retired actress. Shortly after the outbreak of World War II, the family returned to the United States and settled in Los Angeles, California. Soon after, Taylor began auditioning for films. By the age of 12, Taylor landed her first starring role in the 1944 film, National Velvet.

Taylor successfully transitioned from child star to one of the most successful actresses of Hollywood’s Golden Age. She starred in over 50 films and earned two Academy Awards. It wasn’t just her work that caught the public’s attention. She also frequently made headlines for her many, and sometimes scandalous, marriages.

In addition to her long career on the silver screen, Taylor also spent much of her life devoted to charitable organizations and was an outspoken advocate for those suffering from AIDS. In 1985, she co-founded the American Foundation for AIDS Research.

Taylor passed away on May 23, 2011 at the age of 79.
