The third of seven sons, Eisenhower was born on October 14, 1890. Growing up, Eisenhower went by the nickname “Ike,” which was an abbreviation of his last name. After graduating from West Point in 1915, Eisenhower married Mamie Doud. The couple would have two children, but only their son John would survive into adulthood.

During World War II, Eisenhower served as Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces in Europe. In 1952, he was elected the 34th President of the United States in a landslide victory and serve two terms in office.

Fun fact: In 1968, his grandson, David, married Julie Nixon, the daughter of Richard Nixon, who served as Eisenhower’s Vice President. The couple had met as children at the 1956 Republican National Convention.

Eisenhower died on March 28, 1969 at the age of 78.
