Elton John

Happy birthday to Elton John! Today the music icon turns 72.

John was born Reginald Kenneth Dwight on March 25, 1947 in Pinner, Middlesex, England to Stanley Dwight and Sheila Eileen Harris. A gifted piano player from a young age, he won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music at the age of 11. At the age of 17, he dropped out of school to pursue a career in music.

During the 1970s, John skyrocketed to international fame with a string of hits, including “Your Song,” “Tiny Dancer,” and “Rocket Man.” He became known for his outlandish outfits during his concert performances.

Today John is one of the most successful artists in the world, selling over 300 million records worldwide. His tribute single to Princess Diana, “Candle in the Wind,” is the most successful selling single in history with over 33 million copies sold.

Later this year, audiences will be able to watch the story of his life on the big screen. The biopic, Rocketman, will star Taron Egerton as Elton John.
