The first child of King George III and Queen Charlotte, George became Prince Regent in 1811 during his father’s mental illnesses and ascended to the throne following his death in 1820.

George enjoyed living an extravagant lifestyle and at the age of 23, secretly and illegally married Maria Fitzherbert, a twice-widowed commoner and a Roman Catholic. Legally, the marriage was void since the King had not given his consent. In 1795, George was forced to marry his cousin, Princess Caroline of Bruinswick, but the marriage proved to be disastrous. During his coronation, George refused to recognize Caroline as Queen and tried unsuccessfully to divorce her after. The marriage produced one child, Princess Charlotte of Wales. The Princess would die in 1817 after giving birth to a stillborn son.

George spent the last years of his life in seclusion at Windsor. Upon his death in 1830, the throne passed to George III’s third son, who reigned as William IV.
