Profile of the Day: Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

On this day in 1749, German writer, poet, and statesman Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was born.

He was born in Frankfurt, which was then an Imperial Free City of the Holy Roman Empire. Goethe’s father, Johann Caspar Goethe, was the son of a wealthy tailor and owner of one of the most distinguished guesthouses in Frankfurt. His mother, Katharina Elizabeth Textor, was the daughter of a prominent citizen of Frankfurt.

Considered one of the greatest German literary figures of the modern era, Goethe was a celebrity by the age of 25. His tragic play, Faust, is often described as one of the greatest works in German literature. Goethe first began working on his masterpiece at the age of 23 and completed it in stages. The final piece was published after his death at the age of 82 in 1832.
