Profile of the Day: Judy Garland

Do you remember watching The Wizard of Oz? Today we remember legendary actress Judy Garland, who was born on June 10, 1922 in Grand Rapids, Minnesota.

Garland was born Frances Ethel Gumm to Ethel Marion and Francis Avent Gumm, both vaudeville performers. She began her career at an early age, and by 16, she landed the most iconic role of her career, Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz. The classic film continues to remain a favorite of contemporary audiences. She also had memorable performances in the films Meet Me in St. Louis and A Star is Born, for which she earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress.

Despite facing significant troubles in her personal life, Garland found much success not only on film, but also as a recording artist. She released eight studio albums and made record-breaking concert appearances. Several of her recordings have been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

Sadly, Garland died of an accidental overdose on June 22, 1969 at the age of 47.
