Profile of the Day: Lucille Ball

Today we remember actress Lucille Ball, who was born on this day 109 years ago.

Lucille Désirée Ball was born on August 6 ,1911 in Jamestown, New York. After her father died of typhoid fever in 1915, the family moved in with her maternal grandparents. She and her brother were later cared for by their step-grandparents after her mother remarried. As a teen, Ball attended the John Murray Anderson School for the Dramatic Arts in New York City, where she was a classmate of future film star Bette Davis.

Ball began her career as a model and starred in many B-films, but it was her show I Love Lucy that would make her a household name. The series debuted in 1951 and was an instant hit. Starring alongside her real-life husband Desi Arnaz, the show remained the number one show in the country for its entire run. More than six decades after it ended, the show continues to live on in syndication and remains one of the most beloved comedy series in history.
